FISIP UPNVJ and UiTM Malaysia Sign Indonesian Diaspora Research Collaboration

The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of the National Development University (UPN) Veteran Jakarta is strengthening its international collaboration with the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FKPM) of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia. The visit of FISIP Dean, Dr. S. Bekti Istiyanto, to the UiTM campus on Thursday (2/10/2025) resulted in an Implementation Agreement for joint research on the influence of language and communication in the Indonesian diaspora.

The meeting with the Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs of FKPM, TS. Dr. Noor Mayudia binti Mohd Mothar, discussed the research theme Exploring the Impact of Indonesian Diaspora Language and Communication in Shaping Shared Cultural and Linguistic Heritage among Indonesian Expatriates in Malaysia and Indonesia. This study examines the role of diaspora languages in preserving and enriching the cultural heritage and linguistic identity of transnational communities, while also supporting bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Dr. S. Bekti Istiyanto emphasized the strategic value of the initiative. "This joint research understands the dynamics of diaspora communication, strengthens cultural ties, and supports sustainable development in Southeast Asia," he said.
TS. Dr. Noor Mayudia stated FKPM's readiness as an active partner, through academic exchanges, scientific publications, and community service involving lecturers and students from both institutions.

The signing of the agreement by the two leaders serves as the formal basis for the research. This collaboration aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, which highlights the protection of cultural diversity in the era of globalization. Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that 1.5 million Indonesians live in Malaysia, the majority of whom are migrant workers, making this research crucial for their cultural identity.

This initiative opens up opportunities for development in the fields of communication, culture, and media. The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of UPNVJ and the Faculty of Public Relations (FKPM) of UiTM are committed to strengthening academic and socio-cultural ties between the two countries.
