UPNVJ Public Relations — Veteran National Development University Jakarta (UPNVJ) initiated a meeting to establish the Indonesian Communication Lecturers Association as a professional forum for communication science lecturers in Indonesia. The meeting, attended by eight representatives, was held in a hybrid format in Room Nusantara 1A, UPNVJ, on Monday (February 9). This initiative is expected to be the first step in strengthening the identity, solidarity, and standardization of communication lecturer performance nationally.
The formation meeting was attended by several academics and stakeholders from various universities. One of the speakers, Asep Mulyana, emphasized that the association's purpose was to differentiate and complement existing organizations, such as the Association of Higher Education in Communication Sciences (ASPIKOM). He noted that there has been no professional organization specifically for communication science lecturers as instructors.
"The hope is, of course, that this organization will grow and be accepted within the academic community. Frankly, as of today, we all know, there's no specific association for lecturers in the communication sciences field," said Asep Mulyana in his remarks.
He added that the existence of the Indonesian Communication Lecturers Association is expected to be able to answer the collective needs of lecturers, starting from strengthening academic networks, increasing professional capacity, to advocating for the interests of communication science lecturers at the national level.
UPNVJ Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm, in his remarks emphasized the importance of joining professional organizations as a means of strengthening the position and voice of academics in the public sphere and in policy formulation, "Joining organizations is important to make our voices resonate more and fight for the interests of the profession collectively," Anter Venus emphasized.
He further referred to Article 14 of Law Number 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers, which guarantees the right of lecturers to associate in professional organizations. According to him, the establishment of the Indonesian Communication Lecturers Association aligns with the mandate of this law and has the potential to encourage improvements in the quality and standardization of the performance of communication science lecturers in Indonesia. "With a strong legal foundation, the presence of this association can be a strategic instrument to increase the need for standardization of the performance of communication science lecturers, while simultaneously strengthening professionalism and academic integrity," he added.
This founding meeting marked the beginning of a professional organization for communication lecturers, expected to contribute to scientific development, improve the quality of higher education, and strengthen the role of communication lecturers in responding to the challenges of the times. UPNVJ affirmed its commitment to continuing to support academic initiatives that have a broad impact on human resource development and the higher education ecosystem in Indonesia.
