UPNVJ Public Relations - Veteran National Development University Jakarta (UPNVJ) is expanding access to higher education through the Prior Learning Recognition (RPL) pathway for workers, professionals, and members of the public with relevant experience and competencies. Through an assessment of prior education, certifications, portfolios, and work experience, prospective students can earn recognition in the form of Semester Credit Units (SKS). With maximum recognition, undergraduate students have the opportunity to complete their studies in three semesters, or approximately 1.5 years, while master's students can complete their studies in approximately one year.
RPL is a recognition of learning outcomes achieved through formal, non-formal, informal education, and work experience. This recognition can be used as a basis for continuing formal education or for gaining recognition in certain courses based on assessment results. Each credit unit (SKS) recognition is individualized and is not automatically awarded to all applicants.
At the undergraduate level, the UPNVJ Information Systems Study Program offers recognition opportunities for up to 102 credits, or approximately 70 percent of the total curriculum load of 145 credits. The Accounting Study Program can provide a maximum of 92 credits, while the Management Study Program can provide up to 88 credits. For the Physiotherapy Study Program, the number of credits recognized is determined based on the results of an evaluation of each prospective student's learning achievements and supporting documents.
With maximum recognition, students in these undergraduate programs can complete their remaining courses in three semesters. Compared to the regular eight-semester study period, this scheme has the potential to reduce study time by up to five semesters, or more than 60 percent.
At the master's level, the Accounting study program can be recognized for up to 26 credits, while the Management study program can be recognized for up to 27 credits. Students who receive the maximum recognition have the opportunity to complete their studies in one year, compared to the typical two years of regular study.
UPNVJ has also obtained permission to conduct RPL (Research and Development) for its Master's Program in Law. This program is intended for legal professionals and practitioners with relevant work experience and learning outcomes. According to the program documents, applicants to the Master of Laws program through the RPL pathway are required to have at least five years of work experience.
To participate in the recognition process, prospective students must submit a complete, authentic, and verifiable portfolio. These documents can include national or international competency certificates, employment certificates and history, activity logs, references from superiors, and a study permit from the head of the institution.
Submitted documents are then assessed by the UPNVJ RPL assessor team, matching prospective students' experience and competencies to the learning outcomes of each course. For Master of Law applicants, evidence of work experience must be grouped by course to receive recognition.
The shortened study period also has the potential to reduce overall tuition and supporting costs, especially since students only need to take courses that are not yet recognized. However, the extent of savings cannot be generalized as it depends on assessment results, the number of credits approved, the study period, and applicable tuition fee regulations. Prospective students are still required to fulfill their payment obligations in accordance with UPNVJ regulations.
