UPN Veteran Jakarta Strengthens Internationalization, Law Faculty Lecturer Becomes Visiting Lecturer at UiTM Malaysia

Public Relations of UPNVJ – The National Development University “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) strengthens the internationalization agenda of higher education through the participation of Faculty of Law lecturers in the *Visiting Global Lecture* activity at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. The activity, which took place on Friday (3/7/2026) in Cempaka 1 Room B07, UiTM, presented UPNVJ Faculty of Law lecturer, Rianda Dirkareshza, SH, MH, as a *visiting lecturer* in front of UiTM Faculty of Law students. Through this global lecture, UPNVJ encourages cross-country knowledge exchange, especially in the issues of intellectual property law, copyright, and the development of *Generative Artificial Intelligence* or generative artificial intelligence.

On that occasion, Rianda presented the results of her research entitled *Generative AI Is Not a Mere Tool: Revisiting Indonesian Copyright Law* which has been published in *The Journal of World Intellectual Property*. This research examines the implications of the development of *Generative Artificial Intelligence* on the copyright legal regime in Indonesia, especially as AI technology is increasingly able to produce works independently and challenge the concept of authorship in positive law.

Rianda explained that *Generative AI* can no longer be positioned solely as a tool in the creative process. With its machine learning capabilities, AI systems are capable of autonomously generating creative expressions, raising fundamental questions about who can be recognized as the creator of a work from a copyright law perspective.

The research shows that Indonesia's copyright regime, which is still oriented towards human creators or *human-centric copyright*, is not yet fully able to accommodate works produced independently by *Generative AI*. This condition has the potential to create a legal vacuum because a work may fulfill the elements of a creation, but does not have a legal subject that can be recognized as a creator under Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright.

As an alternative solution, the study proposes the creation of a sui generis legal regime for works produced by Generative AI. In this model, AI works are still recognized as works, but have no creator or copyright holder. The work is placed in the public domain from the moment it is first created, while still requiring attribution to the AI system that produced the work. This idea is expected to inform the development of copyright law policies in Indonesia in the future.

The *Visiting Global Lecture* activity was attended by around 20 students of the Faculty of Law UiTM. The discussion was interactive through a question and answer session that demonstrated the high level of attention of the participants towards the development of artificial intelligence and its implications for copyright law. A number of students have also been following the development of AI issues in Indonesia so that the discussion did not only move on a theoretical level, but also touched on regulatory challenges, the concept of authorship, and a comparison of Indonesian and Malaysian legal approaches in responding to *Generative AI* technology.

The participation of UPNVJ Faculty of Law lecturers in this international academic forum is part of the university's efforts to expand its global network through reputable scientific publications, knowledge exchange, and collaboration with partner universities abroad. This activity also strengthens UPNVJ's position as a state university actively responding to contemporary legal issues, particularly in the areas of intellectual property and digital technology.

UPNVJ Rector, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm., views international academic activities like this as a crucial part of the university's transformation toward a more adaptive, impactful, and globally competitive campus. Through lecturers' contributions in international forums, UPNVJ not only expands the institution's reputation but also presents relevant academic ideas for the development of public policy, science, and legal governance in the era of artificial intelligence.
