Supporting the Achievement of the SDGs, UPNVJ Strengthens Environmental Awareness through Waste Sorting Education

UPNVJ Public Relations – The Public Relations Department of UPN "Veteran" Jakarta (UPNVJ) conducted a simple public communication campaign to educate the academic community on how to properly sort waste by type. This activity is part of UPNVJ's efforts to raise collective awareness of the importance of waste management and strengthen its commitment to being a green campus that cares about the environment.

Education is provided by providing information on classifying waste according to its characteristics so that waste is no longer viewed as a single type that can be disposed of mixed together. Through proper understanding, the campus community is expected to be able to distinguish between types of waste and place it in the appropriate receptacles at the source.

As part of the activity, UPNVJ Public Relations also conducted a simple survey with 10 people to determine their level of understanding regarding waste sorting. The results showed that nine out of ten people, or 90 percent, understood how to sort waste by type.

These results indicate that the educational message regarding waste sorting was well understood by the majority of the target audience. However, ongoing education on waste management is essential to ensure that understanding doesn't stop at knowledge but also develops into daily habits and behaviors on campus.

Simple steps like waste sorting are crucial because they serve as the starting point for more effective waste management. Separation at source can facilitate subsequent processing, increase opportunities for reuse and recycling, and reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills.

This public communication is also a form of UPNVJ's support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Settlements, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13 on Climate Change Management.

Through consistent environmental campaigns and education, UPNVJ strives to make waste management an integral part of campus culture. The green campus concept is realized not only through the provision of facilities and infrastructure, but also through changing the mindset and behavior of the entire campus community.

Going forward, education on waste sorting and management is expected to continue to expand, involving students, lecturers, educational staff, and various work units within UPNVJ. With collective participation, the simple habit of sorting waste can develop into a collective movement that will have a broader impact on the environment.

Through this step, UPNVJ emphasized that the contribution of higher education institutions to sustainable development can begin with simple actions carried out consistently, one of which is by developing the habit of sorting and managing waste responsibly.
