From Legal Research to Pencak Silat, Fadhil Receives Mahardika Award at UPNVJ's 76th Graduation Ceremony

UPNVJ Public Relations – Fadhil Muhammad Indiyarto, a graduate of the Law Study Program of the “Veteran” National Development University Jakarta (UPNVJ), received the Karya Mahardika title at the 76th Graduation Ceremony held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), Monday, May 18, 2026.

The award was given for his academic and non-academic achievements during his studies at UPNVJ. Fadhil earned a score of 106.125 based on the accumulation of scientific journal publications and achievements in pencak silat at the national and international levels. This achievement demonstrates that student achievement can thrive through a balance between academic excellence, interest, discipline, and national defense.

Despite the awards, Fadhil admitted that his journey wasn't always easy. He had to balance his time between academics, legal research, training, and various pencak silat competitions.

"The first thing I felt was emotion and pride. All the hard work I'd put in, from training, competitions, to legal research, all the exhaustion felt worth it when I received the announcement," said Fadhil.

During his studies, Fadhil actively wrote in scientific journals as part of his academic development. For him, scientific publication is not merely an obligation, but rather a learning opportunity to deepen his legal understanding through hands-on research, analysis, and writing.

On the other hand, pencak silat has been a vital part of Fadhil's journey as a student. He described the martial art as not only a means to excel but also a way to maintain balance amidst the busy schedule of his studies.

"I practice pencak silat as a hobby and as a stress reliever after the stress of studying and writing journals," he said.

Fadhil also sees a connection between the legal world and pencak silat. He believes that pencak silat not only teaches self-defense techniques but also instills the values of self-control, discipline, and peaceful problem-solving. These values, he said, align with the principle of legal resolution, which upholds a family-oriented approach.

One of Fadhil's most memorable experiences came at the last championship he participated in in Yogyakarta. For the first time, he competed in both martial arts and sparring categories. This experience gave him a new perspective, emphasizing that pencak silat isn't solely about physical strength, but also demands composure, beautiful movements, and appreciation.

The championship was also an emotional moment for Fadhil because it was his last opportunity to represent UPNVJ as a pencak silat athlete.

"Honestly, I feel both pride and sadness. Proud because I've grown, progressed, and achieved as an athlete at UPN Veteran Jakarta since I started college. Sad because, ultimately, all meetings inevitably end in parting," he said.

Amidst his various activities, Fadhil admits that the biggest challenge he faces is time management. To overcome this, he tries to complete academic responsibilities before participating in training or competitions. This strategy helps him maintain his commitment as both a student and an athlete.

Through this achievement, Fadhil hopes UPNVJ students will not be afraid to try, progress, and face failure. He believes that failure is part of the journey to success.

"Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is natural. Use previous failures as stepping stones to future success," he advised.

Fadhil's achievement reflects UPNVJ's success in encouraging students to fully develop their potential, both in academic and non-academic fields. Under the leadership of UPNVJ Rector Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm, the university continues to strengthen its educational ecosystem, emphasizing not only academic achievement but also character, resilience, creativity, and a spirit of national defense, as preparation for graduates facing the professional world.
