UPNVJ Implements Digital Technology and IoT to Strengthen Waste Bank Performance in Bogor

Public Relations of UPNVJ — The Faculty of Computer Science of the Veteran National Development University Jakarta (UPNVJ) implemented digital technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) through a Community Service (PkM) program entitled SMART-WASTE: Application of Digital Waste Bank Technology and the Internet of Things to Improve the Performance of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank in Bogor Regency. The activity took place on August 22–23, 2026, at the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank, Bogor Regency, as an effort to encourage technology-based waste management transformation.

The SMART-WASTE program is led by Novi Trisman Hadi, S.Pd., M.Kom., and is part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, specifically community service. This activity presents a technological innovation developed by students of the Faculty of Computer Science at UPNVJ through a product called EcoScale, a system designed to support the digitalization of waste bank operations.

The SMART-WASTE program included outreach on the importance of waste sorting from source to source, an introduction to technological devices, and the handover of the equipment to the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank managers. Through these activities, the community and waste bank managers gained an understanding of the use of technology to support more effective and sustainable waste management.

The application of digital technology and IoT in this program is expected to improve the operational efficiency of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank through a more measurable, documented, and adaptive management system. This innovation is the first step in building a digital-based waste bank ecosystem that can strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

Karsim, Head of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank, expressed his appreciation for the implementation of the SMART-WASTE program. He stated that the technological devices provided through this program are beneficial in supporting the digitalization of waste bank management.

"This tool is very useful in supporting the digitalization of Lapak Lontar," said Karsim, Wednesday (26/8/2026).

The Head of the SMART-WASTE Community Service Team, Novi Trisman Hadi, explained that the program is a form of collaboration between lecturers, students, and the community in presenting science-based solutions.

"This activity is a collaboration between lecturers, students, and the community to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, especially in the field of Community Service," said Novi Trisman Hadi.

The development of EcoScale through SMART-WASTE also provides a platform for UPNVJ Faculty of Computer Science students to apply their academic knowledge to meet community needs. This program is expected to continue beyond the socialization and equipment distribution phase, but to develop into a sustainable, technology-based waste bank management system.

The Rector of UPN "Veteran" Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm., emphasized that technology-based innovations developed by the academic community must provide tangible benefits to society. By strengthening collaboration between universities and the community, UPNVJ continues to encourage the production of academic work that is applicable, relevant, and able to address environmental and social challenges in the digital era.
