UPNVJ Public Relations – Veteran National Development University Jakarta (UPNVJ) strengthened the implementation of risk management in its Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) through a knowledge sharing session with the University of Jember Internal Supervisory Unit (SPI UNEJ) on Friday (October 23, 2026). The event, titled “Implementation of Risk Management in the Internal Quality Assurance System,” featured two experts from SPI UNEJ to discuss strategies for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks in higher education. This initiative is part of UPNVJ’s efforts to continuously improve the effectiveness of governance, accountability, and the quality of academic services.
The two speakers present were the Chairperson of SPI, University of Jember, Prof. Dr. Ika Barokah Suryaningsih, SE, MM, CRP., QIA., and the Head of the Risk Management Division of SPI, University of Jember, Nova Elmaidah, S.Si., M.Cs., CRP., CPIA. Both shared their knowledge and experience regarding the implementation of risk management as a supporting instrument for controlling and improving the quality of higher education.
Strengthening risk management is a priority for UPNVJ because higher education institutions face various challenges, ranging from effective resource management, achieving performance targets, to improving the quality of services to the academic community. Risks that are not properly identified and managed have the potential to hinder program implementation and the achievement of the university's strategic goals.
Through these activities, UPNVJ strives to improve work units' understanding of the importance of systematic risk management. This process includes identifying potential obstacles, analyzing the likelihood and impact of risks, determining priority management measures, and developing mitigation measures tailored to the organization's needs.
The integration of risk management into the SPMI is also expected to strengthen the implementation of the Determination, Implementation, Evaluation, Control, and Improvement (PPEPP) cycle. Through this approach, quality management focuses not only on evaluating results but also takes into account various factors that could potentially impact program success from the planning stage.
UPNVJ Chancellor Emphasizes Risk Management as a Work Culture
UPNVJ Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, emphasized that strengthening risk management is an important part of building professional, adaptive, and quality-improving university governance.
"Risk management should not be viewed merely as an effort to anticipate problems, but rather as part of the institution's work culture. Each unit needs to have the ability to identify potential risks, mitigate them, and ensure that every program and policy is implemented in accordance with established objectives. Thus, an internal quality assurance system can be a strategic instrument for improving the performance and quality of university services," said Venus.
According to the Chancellor, implementing risk management must be a shared responsibility for all work units. Awareness of potential risks is expected to encourage more measured decision-making, increase the effectiveness of program implementation, and strengthen accountability in institutional management.
This approach also positions risk management as part of the decision-making process, not simply as a matter of fulfilling administrative obligations. This ensures that each unit is able to identify potential obstacles early and determine remedial measures before the risks impact service quality or the achievement of university targets.
Exchange of Good Practices for Strengthening Governance
The presence of speakers from SPI Universitas Jember provided an opportunity for UPNVJ to learn about the approaches and experiences of other institutions in developing risk management systems.
This knowledge exchange is crucial because each university has different organizational characteristics, operational challenges, and control needs. UNEJ's SPI experience is expected to inform UPNVJ's efforts to refine its risk identification, monitoring, and evaluation mechanisms to suit the university's internal circumstances.
In addition to strengthening control aspects, the implementation of risk management integrated with SPMI is expected to improve institutional readiness to face regulatory changes, the dynamics of higher education needs, and demands for transparency and public accountability.
These efforts are in line with the need for universities to build a governance system that is not only able to meet quality standards, but also ensures the sustainability of the implementation of education, research, and community service programs.
By strengthening risk management-based SPMI, UPNVJ seeks to build a more structured, measurable, and continuous improvement-oriented control mechanism.
For UPNVJ Rector, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm., strengthening governance is part of the university's transformational direction in improving the quality of higher education institutions and services. The integration of risk management into the quality assurance system is expected to support more effective policy implementation, strengthen public trust, and encourage the achievement of UPNVJ's strategic goals in line with the spirit of "Transforming to Achieve Excellence."
