German Expert Gives Public Lecture on Patent Standardization at FH UPNVJ

Public RelationsUPNVJ - A patent expert from Germany, Dr. Joachim Stellmach, gave a public lecture to students of the Masters program at the Faculty of Law, National Development University "Veteran" Jakarta on Wednesday, October 4 2023. The lecture material given raised the theme "Visualization of the Patent System and Comparison with Other Countries."

In his presentation, Stellmach discussed the importance of transparency in the process of registering and claiming a patent. One important reason behind this is that companies often try to make money from patent claims.

Germany alone received around 188 thousand patent applications last year. Therefore, continued Stellmach, the patent registration system needs to be paid attention to.

The principles applied by Germany regarding patent issues are Problems, Solutions, and Approach for the Prior Acts. Related to this, in his general lecture, Stellmach showed a graph related to the role of patents that will be registered with existing patents.

Stellmach said that even though Germany is part of the European Union, matters related to patent rights are left to each member country. The EU's official position on patents is a combination of the provisions of all member states.

Comparing with Indonesia, Stellmach said that Indonesia does not yet specifically have objective parameters regarding what is the benchmark for patent rights.

"Regarding patent rights, there needs to be standardization so that there is an objective system in assessing a patent," said Stellmach, who holds the position of Assistant Directorate of the European Patent Office.

"Patent standardization also needs to be considered because if it is too easy, it can reduce the reputation of the patent itself," he concluded.
