UPNVJ Public Relations - The Faculty of Law of the National Development University “Veteran” Jakarta (FH UPNVJ) held a Roundtable Discussion “Strategic Collaboration in Legal Education and International Research: Indonesia–Malaysia Perspective” on Wednesday (15/10/2025). This event, part of the Adjunct Professor Program, was attended by the dean, lecturers, young researchers, and Prof. Dr. Nazli Ismail, a constitutional law expert from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) Malaysia.
Dean of the Faculty of Law, UPNVJ, Dr. Suherman, SH, LL.M., opened the event and emphasized the roundtable's role in the faculty's internationalization agenda. "We chose Prof. Nazli because of their official Letter of Agreement (LoA) and shared vision in cyber law and legal technology. We hope to produce Scopus articles, SINTA publications, and a book chapter on comparative Indonesian-Malaysian law," he said.
The Deputy Dean III of the Faculty of Law at UPNVJ added that this forum marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration. "Follow-up activities include international scientific articles, book chapters, and academic podcasts with Prof. Nazli to improve student legal literacy," he said. The activities also strengthen joint research, cross-border publications, and global community service.
An interactive discussion highlighted comparative law issues. Dr. Yanti, a lecturer and doctoral student in the Faculty of Law at UPNVJ, outlined her research plan on interfaith marriages. Prof. Nazli responded: "In Malaysia, Muslim marriages are governed by the Sharia Courts of each state, with the autonomy of the Sultan. Comparative research must consider local contexts, such as Terengganu or Selangor." Dr. Suherman encouraged students to examine the specifics of each state for accurate results.
The closing remarks expressed appreciation for the commitment of both universities. Follow-up plans include a book chapter and an article in the Veteran Law Review, plus an International Community Service Program in Malaysia involving faculty and students from both countries.
This collaboration aligns with the trend of strengthening Indonesia-Malaysia academic networks, such as the intergovernmental MoU and university consortium that the Ministry of Education and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) is encouraging to increase student mobility and joint research. The Faculty of Law (FH) of UPNVJ emphasizes internationalization to strengthen national defense while upholding Indonesia's constitutional values.
