UPN Veteran Jakarta Explores Collaboration with Bogor Regency Youth and Sports Agency for Student Internships and Village Scholarships

Public Relations of UPNVJ - Undergraduate Physiotherapy Study Program students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIKES) of the National Veteran Development University of Jakarta (UPNVJ) carried out Project Based Learning (PjBL) with the theme of general and special examination of pediatric physiotherapy in children with Down Syndrome. This activity took place at the Association of Parents of Children with Down Syndrome (POTADS) community in South Jakarta on Monday, December 22, 2025, guided by lecturer Rena Mailani, S.Ft., M.Biomed, AIFO. The goal was to improve student competency in clinical assessment while providing direct support for 22 participating children, which included evaluation of joint flexibility and sensory integration.

The PjBL implementation was divided into two main sessions: assessment and play-based therapy. During the assessment session, students conducted a history taking, measured the Beighton Score for joint flexibility, and examined sensory integration, including tactile, visual, vestibular, auditory, and coordination aspects. Results showed that the majority of participating mothers were over 30 years old, consistent with Down Syndrome risk literature. Most children did not experience joint hyperflexibility and were able to respond well to sensory stimulation.

The interactive sessions focused on games that stimulate motor and sensory skills in a safe and fun environment. The positive response came from parents at POTADS, who appreciated the education about the role of physiotherapy in supporting children's growth and development and independence. These activities enriched students' experiences in communication, empathy, and teamwork, while also strengthening the synergy between the university and the community for pediatric healthcare services.

In an official statement, UPNVJ Chancellor Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm., stated, "The PjBL initiative at FIKES supports the policy of defending the country through inclusive health education. Achievements like this strengthen UPNVJ's position as a leading PTN BLU, with a target of increasing community contributions until 2030, in line with the vision of Advanced Indonesia.
