UPNVJ Highlights Off-label Drug Ethics in National Pharmacy Webinar

 

HumasUPNVJ - Undergraduate Pharmacy Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, National Development University “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ), in collaboration with PT AIM Training Center, successfully held a National Health Webinar with the theme “Off-label Medicine Use: Ethics, Practice and Future Directions” on Saturday, May 17, 2025, via the Zoom platform.

This activity is part of the routine educational program of Pharmacy Webinar which is consistently held by the Pharmacy Study Program, FK UPNVJ, as a form of academic contribution in increasing the capacity of health workers.

Although it was held online, this webinar still received high enthusiasm from the participants. Around 200 participants attended, consisting of UPNVJ students, pharmacists, pharmacy vocational staff, internal medicine specialists, to external participants from various institutions.

The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine UPNVJ, Dr. dr. Taufiq Fredrik Pasiak, who in his speech emphasized the importance of caution in the practice of using off-label drugs.

"Off-label use, although it can be a therapeutic option, must still be carried out with ethical considerations, supported by valid scientific evidence, and within a clear regulatory framework to ensure patient safety," explained Dr. Taufiq.

The webinar was hosted by MC Siti Ulfiyana, STP, and moderated by Apt. Dhigna Luthfiyani Citra Pradana, M.Sc., a lecturer in the Pharmacy Study Program, FK UPNVJ, who facilitated the discussion in a dynamic and informative manner.

Three expert speakers were present to present comprehensive material from various perspectives: clinical, academic, and regulatory.

* Apt. Halim Priyahau Jaya, S.Farm., M.Farm.Klin., Clinical Pharmacist of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, discussed the practice of using off-label drugs in hospitals.
* Prof. Apt. Zullies Ikawati, Ph.D., Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Gadjah Mada University, reviews the working mechanism of off-label drugs and the future direction of their use globally.
* Dra. Tri Asti Isnariani, Apt., M.Pharm., Director of Drug Standardization, Narcotics, Psychotropics, Precursors, and Addictive Substances of BPOM RI, delivered an ethical review of off-label drug use in Indonesia and various countries.

The presence of the three speakers not only enriched the participants' insight into the dynamics of off-label drug use, but also strengthened cross-sector collaboration between practitioners, academics, and regulators in an effort to ensure the quality of health services.

This webinar also provides added value in the form of Professional Credit Units (SKP) from the Ministry of Health for registered health workers.
